{"id":422,"date":"2019-06-13T14:31:10","date_gmt":"2019-06-13T02:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box2052.temp.domains\/~hekuabmy\/rainieye\/?p=422"},"modified":"2019-06-13T14:34:06","modified_gmt":"2019-06-13T02:34:06","slug":"how-do-we-nourish-a-future-population-of-10-billion-people-within-planetary-boundaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rainieye.com\/?p=422","title":{"rendered":"How do we nourish a future population of 10 billion people within planetary boundaries?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>What is food supposed to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Support all living beings on the planet, nourish our body, bring us health and vitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But what is it really doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating modern chronic diseases, destroying beautiful land and forests, and drastically transforming the climate on this planet that we call \u201c<strong>Home<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t believe me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eatforum.org\/about\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet, Health<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/a>is a group of over 30 world-leading scientists who have come together to&nbsp;<strong>transform the global food system through an evidence-based approach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ba18\">Here are some&nbsp;<strong>disruptive truths<\/strong>&nbsp;from their full scientific review (<a href=\"https:\/\/eatforum.org\/content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/EAT-Lancet_Commission_Summary_Report.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1<\/a>) of what constitutes a healthy diet from a sustainable food&nbsp;system:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Unhealthy diets now pose a greater risk to morbidity and mortality than unsafe sex, alcohol, drug and tobacco use combined.<\/li><li>Today, agriculture occupies nearly&nbsp;<strong>40% of global land<\/strong>. In parallel,&nbsp;<strong>over 2 billion adults are overweight and obese<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How can we have starvation and obesity under the same sky?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why are some children eating chicken wings and ice creams while others finding food scraps in the dirt?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why are terrible diseases so prevalent in countries where food is so accessible?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"d54c\">It all needs to&nbsp;change.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Without action, today\u2019s children\u200a\u2014\u200ayour children, will inherit a sick planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a sick planet will not sustain healthy children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>\u201c Food is the single strongest lever to optimize human health and environmental sustainability on Earth.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>There is not a simple reset button that we can push to get our offspring a clean planet, just like there is no magic pill that can reverse heart diseases overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is&nbsp;<strong>a way of living<\/strong>, supported by a huge amount of science, that can reverse the damage that we have done to our health, environment, and ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>plant-based diet<\/strong>&nbsp;with minimal animal source foods is a solution for <strong>lifestyle-related diseases (<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25198208\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/a><strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5971679\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/a><strong>,&nbsp;<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6235058\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>4<\/strong><\/a><strong>),<\/strong>&nbsp;as well as reducing the&nbsp;<strong>environmental impacts of food (<\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6392\/987\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>5<\/strong><\/a><strong>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mlcalfxvkf56.i.optimole.com\/w:1024\/h:682\/q:auto\/https:\/\/rainieye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/plants.jpeg\" alt=\"plant based food\" class=\"wp-image-423\" width=\"551\" height=\"366\"\/><figcaption>hoto by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@annapelzer?utm_source=medium&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\">Anna Pelzer<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/?utm_source=medium&amp;utm_medium=referral\" target=\"_blank\">Unsplash<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7db2\">What should your new food plate look&nbsp;like?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Approximately half a plate of vegetables and fruits; the other half consisting of primarily whole grains, plant protein sources, unsaturated plant oils, and&nbsp;<strong>(optionally)&nbsp;<\/strong>modest amounts of animal sources of protein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mlcalfxvkf56.i.optimole.com\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:auto\/https:\/\/rainieye.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/food-plate.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-424\" width=\"397\" height=\"369\"\/><figcaption>Source: EAT-Lancet Commission Summary&nbsp;Report<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It is totally understandable if you believe that animal proteins are necessary for our health. This belief is ingrained into us by the purposefully misleading information from certain sectors of the food industry and commercial companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As difficult as it is to rewire our beliefs, truth needs to be told and heard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A well-planned plant-based diet with a variety of food<\/strong>&nbsp;will provide you with all the nutrients you need, likely more fiber, minerals, and vitamins than what you are getting now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plenty of evidence-based dietary support is out there in the forms of videos, podcasts, books, documentaries, blogs, from plant-based doctors, dietitians and enthusiastic health professionals such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"http:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nutritionfacts.org<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcrm.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionstudies.org\/the-china-study\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The China Study<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forksoverknives.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forks over knives<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/plantproof.com\/category\/podcast\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Plant Proof Podcast<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are reading this article, I think it is safe to assume that you live in a country where you don\u2019t have to rely on animal proteins to meet your nutritional requirements. Halve the consumption of animal products, processed foods and refined&nbsp;sugars.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3b7f\">How much impact can you&nbsp;bring?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be thinking: The planet is already so destroyed, how can my contribution change anything at all?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>True, a radical shift in global food production needs to happen to reverse the amount of damage in place, but it cannot happen without behavioral changes from every single consumer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the challenge we are facing is overwhelming and urgent, small changes every day still help!
